Hi.

Welcome to my blog where I document my learning in teaching, coaching, language and culture. During the school year, I have the honor of working with the best of two worlds. Part of my day, I work alongside with English language learners in the classroom part of my day. The other part of my day, I get to share it with wonderful colleagues as we sit down together, providing instructional coaching, brainstorming possibilities together or just listening.

Making assumptions never served me well...#the100thDayProject

2. 2.2021

We unexpectedly had a snow day today. I say “unexpectedly” because it just simply doesn’t happen that often. This one took us by surprise and truly, it’s been a long time since we had a snow day in our district. This news brought many of us immediate joy. All of a sudden, we had a day ahead to enjoy in the ways we deem enjoyable. Our brain released those happy chemicals needed in order to feel joy and excited again. We might have not realized until the evening, how much our bodies needed this joy.

I’m wondering if this was the case for many of our students today. I would love to know when was the last time they were surprised? What did that look like? What did that feel like? What brings them joy? What is their favorite thing to do when they are at home? I know that not everyone enjoys a snow day. I understand that it doesn’t mean “ joy” and “excitement” for everyone. Making assumptions never served me well. So tomorrow instead of asking, “Did you have fun on your snow day?” I would just stand back and listen and let them tell stories that they want to tell. We don’t all observe the world through the same lenses. And that’s perfectly ok.
